Chris Fogel has a Grammy nomination under his belt, the satisfaction of knowing he mixed one of pop's greatest selling CD's of all time, and several box office smashes baring his name in the credits as film score mixer...and he has barely even gotten started. Generation X founding queen, Alanis Morissette, and her multi-platinum record, Jagged Little Pill, helped put Fogel on the map in 1995. This record, his first major success, was a showcase of his unique mixing style which integrates signature loops with the band. Fogel, who worked the San Francisco club scene as a successful deejay for seven years prior to launching his audio career, says that his mixing style has been heavily influenced by his background. In 1990 he made the decision to take his career to the next level by attending Full Sail Center for the Recording Arts in Florida, where he graduated with Valedictorian honors. Quite an accomplishment for the Reno, NV native, but it wasn't until he hit the "real world" that he truly proved that he was at the "top of the class". A mere two months after landing his first gig at Westlake Studios in Los Angeles, studio manager Steve Burdick recognized his potential and put him into session work full-time. At Westlake, he cut his teeth as an assistant on many sessions for Morissette's producer, Glen Ballard. His relationship with Ballard flourished when Fogel proved to be an integral part in the building and running of Ballard's own Euphonix studio. The duo began to cut demos on Morissette in 1994 when Fogel left Westlake to work with Ballard full-time. Those demos, which eventually became the ground-breaking album, set Fogel on a path where he worked with the superstar on five projects, including Jagged Little Pill, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, 2002's Under Rug Swept and a live album he mixed for Morissette in Sydney. The immense success with Morissette resulted in other high-profile artists seeking out his talents. His discography reads like a who's who of the music industry: Aerosmith, Sheryl Crow and U2, just to name a few. A highlight of his career came in 1998 when Fogel garnered a Grammy nomination for his engineering work on Robbie Robertson's Capitol Album, Contact from the Underworld of Redboy. Later that year he found his current successful niche: mixing for film. Fogel teamed up with renowned film score composer, Edward Shearmur, in 1998 to work on the film Cruel Intentions. This was just the first installment of a growing list of successes for the pair. In 2001, they enjoyed triple box office smashes with Charlie's Angels, Kevin Spacey's KPAX and Sandra Bullock's Miss Congeniality. Recent hits included The Sweetest Thing, Reign of Fire, Johnny English, Charlie's Angels 2: Full Throttle, The Skeleton Key, Wimbledon, The Starter Wife and the Emmy-Award-Winning score to the series Masters of Horror. Upcoming projects include College Road Trip and Righteous Kill, starring Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. In 2002, Fogel began working with film composer Theodore Shapiro. Their first two projects together were the current hits Old School, starring Will Ferrel, and A View From the Top featuring Gwyneth Paltrow. Shapiro and Fogel's recent hits include Starsky and Hutch, Dodgeball, Fun with Dick and Jane, The Devil Wears Prada and Blades of Glory. 2008 projects include the Will Ferrell basketball comedy Semi Pro and Tropic Thunder, starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black. In addition to his work with Shearmur and Shapiro, Fogel has also worked with composers Christophe Beck (2 For the Money and Miss Congeniality 2), Lyle Workman (Superbad and The 40-Year Old Virgin) and Marcelo Zarvos (Winged Creatures). Fogel, who has appeared recently on the covers of EQ Magazine and Surround Professional magazine as well as being profiled in Mix, Billboard, Pro Sound News and Sound on Sound is fast becoming a leader in the field of film scoring. He mixes exclusively on Euphonix consoles. |
